About Us
An Introduction to the Club
The Chelmsford & District Model Railway Club has been established for over 33 years and is one of the leading clubs in the Essex area. The Club has met in some interesting places - from a carpet shop to a members garage. We moved in to our present premises in January 2014 and these have been described by others to be one of the best clubs they have visited. At present we have around 100 members and usually have room for more. The club has layouts in O, OO, N, and OO9 scales either working or under construction and many members also have their own layouts.
Meetings take place on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7pm and give the opportunity to operate, build and just chat about models and railways with people who are of a like mind.
Why join a Club?
Some people want to follow their model railway hobby on their own at home and that’s fine. However, for many people the hobby can be further enhanced by joining with others who have similar interests. This gives the opportunity to discuss the details, techniques and find answers or alternatives to various aspects of the hobby. Many of our members have been involved for years with modelling or railways and enjoy sharing opinions. The club premises and layouts give a
member the opportunity to operate trains and assist in constructing a large layout which they may not be able to do at home. You can always give it a try by contacting us to arranging a visit.
Premises
In our excellent premises in Chelmsford we have room for many layouts, some of which are operational and some under construction. Free parking is available and we have disabled spaces right outside and access is reasonable for wheelchairs. For security reasons we prefer to advise potential new members of the location when they are due to visit us.
Social Activities
The Club organises trips to places with railway and modelling interest for the members. In addition we hold an annual barbeque, as well as Family and Friends Day when they can visit the Club.
Exhibition
The Club holds an annual exhibition in Chelmsford at St. John’s Payne School in October. This is an opportunity to show some of the club and members layouts as well as those invited from enthusiasts outside the club. The exhibition also includes a good number of traders.
